As a member of the Medicine Program team, you will have an opportunity to participate in providing support and care to a diverse group of patients and families. This role is an integral part of our care team providing support, mentorship, and education to patients, families, and colleagues for complex General Medicine patients.
Description:
The Assistant Head Nurse (AHN) provides effective clinical leadership, functional supervision, and, as needed, performs front line Registered Nursing duties. The AHN promotes and models leadership competencies by demonstrating good judgment and critical thinking skills, and developing and maintaining strong nursing practice in the designated scope of practice. The AHN fosters team effectiveness, demonstrating excellent interpersonal and leadership skills, communicating effectively, and seeking to resolve staff issues. The AHN develops a supportive environment for multidisciplinary learning. This position is covered by the terms and conditions of the UNA Collective Agreement.

Required Qualifications:
- Graduate of a Registered Nurse program or recognized equivalent required.
- Active registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) or College of Registered Psychiatric Nurse of Alberta (CRPNA) is required.
- Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider (Level C) required.
Additional Required Qualifications:
- Undergraduate degree in nursing (BN, BScN, or equivalent) – a combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Three years recent Medicine and Geriatric experience.
- 2 years demonstrated supervisory or leadership experience (e.g. Charge Nurse or other leadership experience).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Current CNA certification in Geriatrics or Medicine/Surgery.
- Current education and access in Ambulatory Connect Care.
- Proficiency with Electronic Medical Records, Connect Care, VAX, and ESP.
- Committed to safe, effective, and ethical patient care and work practices.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, highly stressful environment.
- Able to deescalate tense situations.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to participate as an effective member of and lead the interprofessional team.
