Your Opportunity:
As an Assistant Head Nurse of a 24 bed inpatient orthopedic unit, you will be responsible for staff assignments, patient flow and acting as a role model, clinical resource and advocate for nursing staff. In addition to providing frontline nursing care, as required, you will take a leadership role in the promotion of quality patient care and the implementation of operational priorities. Your in-depth knowledge and skills, advanced judgment and clinical experience, will assist in providing solutions for complex health care issues at all levels. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of Covenant Health.
Description:
The Assistant Head Nurse (AHN) provides effective clinical leadership, functional supervision and, as needed, performs front line Registered Nursing duties. The AHN promotes and models leadership competencies by demonstrating good judgement and critical thinking skills, and developing and maintaining strong nursing practice in the designated scope of practice. The AHN fosters team effectiveness, demonstrating excellent interpersonal and leadership skills, communicating effectively and seeking to resolve staff issues. The AHN develops a supportive environment for multidisciplinary learning. This position is covered by the terms and conditions of the UNA Collective Agreement.

Required Qualifications:
- Graduate of a Registered Nurse program or recognized equivalent required.
- Active registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) or College of Registered Psychiatric Nurse of Alberta (CRPNA) is required.
- Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider (Level C) required.
Additional Required Qualifications:
- Minimum three (3) years of recent inpatient surgical nursing experience (general/orthopedic surgery) within the last two years.
- Minimum one (1) year of recent charge nurse experience in an inpatient surgical setting within the last two years.
- Ability to independently manage patient assignments and respond to emergencies (e.g., code blue, rapid response).
- Physically able to stand and walk for extended periods and regularly lift over 10 pounds.
