Position Description
Position Summary
The NP works autonomously and in collaboration with physicians, other members of the inter-professional team and patients/families to provide evidence-informed care that is grounded in professional, ethical and legal standards. The NP integrates his/her in-depth knowledge of advanced nursing practice and theory, health management, health promotion, disease/injury prevention and other relevant biomedical and psychosocial theories to provide comprehensive and patient/family centred care. NP practice is characterized by the simultaneous integration and blending of competencies at a level of complexity that reflects the NP's highly developed critical thinking skills, clinical nursing experience, and advanced education.
Qualifications
- Masters in Nursing (alternatively, masters in relevant health care field)
- Proof of successful completion of controlled substances education required
- Completion of NP-Adult Diploma program in a nursing faculty at an accredited university
- Current registration in the RN(EC) class with the College of Nurses of Ontario required
- Mandatory 5 years of general nursing clinical experience
- Successful completion of a CNO approved course to legally enable prescribing of controlled substances
- Previous experience with hematology program or related service preferred
- Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO) membership
- Canadian Nurses' Association (CN) - (clinical specialty-specific CNA certification preferred)
- University faculty appointment or eligibility to pursue faculty appointment
Responsibilities
- Performs comprehensive health assessment and complete or focused physical examination; identifies normal and abnormal findings, as appropriate to client presentation. The NP exercises clinical reasoning and critical inquiry and assumes responsibility for follow-up, when indicated.
- Formulates differential diagnoses, orders and/or performs screening and diagnostic investigations, interprets results using evidence-informed clinical reasoning and critical inquiry, and assumes responsibility for follow-up for patients with Thromboembolic disease and/or suspected thromboembolism.
- Prescribes pharmacotherapy, within the NP scope of practice, based on the client's health history, disease, disorder, condition or life stage, and individual circumstances. Counsels clients and their families on the benefits, potential side effects, interactions and the importance of compliance with treatments, medications and follow-up.
- Treats and manages acute and chronic illness within a holistic and client/family-centred model of care. Anticipates and diagnoses emergent, urgent and life-threatening situations.
- Performs invasive/non-invasive procedures for the clinical management and/or prevention of disease, injuries, disorders or conditions.
- Acts as consultant to and/or consults with or refers to other health care professionals when encountering client care needs beyond the NP legal scope of practice, beyond his/her individual competencies, or when client care would benefit from the additional expertise or advice of other health care professionals.
