FFS Position Neurologist-Neuro-Ophthalmologist
The University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, Department of Medicine, Division of Neurology in partnership with Alberta Health Services, invites applications for a neuro-ophthalmologist clinical neurologist to be based between the University of Alberta Hospital, Kaye Edmonton Clinic, and Royal Alexandra Hospital with cross-appointment within Department of Ophthalmology. Located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the Faculty has been internationally recognized as among the world’s top 50 medical schools and as one of Canada’s premier health-education institutions.
The Division of Neurology consists of 60 neurologists in academic and community practice and 3 Scientists. UA is one of the largest stroke programs in Canada. Internationally recognized research is conducted and published from UA. All subspecialties of neurology are represented among the faculty in addition to stroke including:
- Autoimmune and Multiple Sclerosis
- Cognitive Neurology
- Epilepsy
- Movement Disorders
- Neuromuscular and ALS
- Autonomic Neurophysiology
- Headache Clinic
We have 5 research chairs within our Division. Neurology holds multiple CIHR, NIH, PCORI and other prestigious external grants. Our Neurology residency program is strong and accepts 5-6 residents/year. We have multiple subspecialty fellowship programs, with the highest number of fellows in Stroke. Overall, we provide a rich training and work environment across Neurology.
There is a well-established neuro-ophthalmology academic clinical program within the Department of Ophthalmology, situated at the Royal Alexandra Hospital. The neuro-ophthalmology program serves a large catchment area and patient population within the Central and Northern Alberta as well as the Northwest Territories with multi-disciplinary supports in the Eye Centre at the Royal Alexandra hospital. The neuro-ophthalmologist group would benefit from a neurologist-trained neuro-ophthalmologist to round out their group in expertise and skills.
Alberta has one of the highest rates of MS in the world. The Kaye Edmonton Clinic is a highly successful multi-disciplinary program renowned across Canada for comprehensive care of people living with neurologic disorders. There is an active clinical research program, and basic neuroscience research within Ophthalmology and Neurology and the UAlberta. The academic division and department have close ties to the University of Alberta Neuroscience and Mental Health Institute (NMHI), a discovery and translational research collaborative.
Key accountabilities of the position will include, but will not be limited to:
- Participation in divisional meetings, retreats and initiatives in both neurology and ophthalmology
- Neurology inpatient services
- Neurology calls on a rotating roster
- Supporting ophthalmology clinical care
The successful candidate will be expected to be very involved in educating residents and students – classroom and bedside, OSCE development and participation, and to aid in coordinating elective and rotational experience for trainees.

The successful candidate will have an MD degree and certification in Neurology with the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada. He or she will be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA). The successful candidate should have advanced training and expertise in neuro-ophthalmology.
