The Alex Mobile Health program delivers barrier-free health care directly to individuals in need across Calgary. Operating from a specially equipped vehicle, our multidisciplinary team provides primary care, mental health support, addiction services, and social care to individuals experiencing homelessness or facing challenges accessing traditional care. Rooted in harm reduction and trauma-informed practices, the Mobile Health program meets people where they are, physically and emotionally, offering compassionate, dignified care on wheels.
Reporting to the Program Manager, the mobile Registered Nurse (RN) enjoys working with acute and complex mental health clients and has a passion for patient-centered care. Working in cooperation with a Physician, Nurse Practitioner, and the Mobile Resource Specialist, the mobile RN fills a vital role within the mobile clinic flow structure, including initial triage, patient assessment, treatment, case management, care coordination, and phlebotomy. Registered Nurses are accountable to the public for their own practice, the National Licensing Body, the Canadian Nurses’ Association Code of Ethics, and the Health Profession Act.
This is a full-time, 12-month contract position.
What You Will Do
- Provide culturally sensitive nursing services that are responsive and adaptable in meeting the needs of a vulnerable population.
- Perform appropriate assessment, treatment, education, orientation, referral, urgent response, and triage activities to clients.
- Advocate for the unique needs of clients to a variety of community partners.
- Adhere to strict documentation processes in accordance with the standards, policies and procedures of The Alex Community Health Centre, and practice standards of the respective Provincial College.
- Work collaboratively and in consultation with other Alex Team Members, community agencies, and referral sources.
- Participate in health education, health promotion, and outreach activities.
- Participate in research, evaluation and quality improvement activities as directed by The Alex.
- Perform laboratory procedures and prepare specimens for transport in accordance with Calgary Laboratory Services guidelines.
- Schedule appointments for patients with internal and external providers for clinical tests, procedures, consultations, and follow-up as directed.
- Assist with data collection and entry as directed.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
What You Bring
- Graduate from an accredited degree program in nursing.
- Active registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta as a practicing member.
- Minimum of two (2) years Nursing experience working with clients with mental health and addictions disorders, homelessness, and poverty.
- Demonstrated experience and knowledge in providing addictions and mental health support.
- Excellent communication, organizational, advocacy, teaching, and rapport-building skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team model and innovative outreach service delivery model.
- Ability to work independently in the community with clients.
- Experience with community outreach and crisis intervention is required.
- Knowledge of social services and non-profit services in Calgary is an asset.
- Experience with group facilitation is an asset.
- Ability to multi-task in fast-paced environment.
- Knowledge of HIA.
- Excellent assessment, documentation, organization, communication, leadership and teamwork skills.
- Class 5 driver’s license, personal vehicle for business use, and a clean 3-year drivers abstract are required.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days of hire date; certification must be valid for a minimum of 6 months upon hire.
- A satisfactory vulnerable sector criminal record clearance and child welfare intervention check are required.
- Demonstrated knowledge, understanding and commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action is preferred.
Work Environment and Hours
- Predominantly outreach role with some in-office components (Alex Mobile Headquarters: 4539 6 th Street NE, Calgary).
- Standard hours are 8:30 am – 4:30 pm, Monday – Friday; some flexibility may be available and required.
- 0.8–1.0 FTE (30 to 37.5 hours per week), negotiable.
- 0.8 FTE must follow a Monday to Thursday schedule.
- This is a full-time, 12-month contract position.
