Position Summary

Consistent with the mission, values, objectives, and policies of Eden Mental Health Centre, the nurse acts as a resource to the patient as the patient moves from the acute illness phase to stabilization and then to discharge back into the community. The nurse plays the pivotal role of assisting patients to mobilize their internal resources, that is, to encourage and guide patients to recognize, identify, utilize, and build on their capabilities in managing their life in view of their mental illness.

Qualifications

  • Must be a qualified Registered Psychiatric Nurse and/or Registered Nurse in the Province of Manitoba and hold a valid nursing license
  • Thorough knowledge of nursing theory and practice
  • Demonstrates good interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
  • Observes the Code of Ethics of the licensing body
  • Physically and mentally capable of performing duties assigned

Responsibilities

  • Conduct patient assessments each shift, monitoring mental status, safety, progress, and treatment goals
  • Collaborate with patients and the care team to develop, implement, and regularly update individualized care and treatment plans
  • Provide direct nursing care, administer medications, and coordinate therapies while ensuring accurate documentation
  • Engage patients in therapeutic conversations and activities to build rapport, support recovery, and encourage social skill development
  • Advocate for patients’ needs, resources, and supports within the treatment team and broader healthcare network
  • Evaluate patient progress, review treatment effectiveness, and adjust care plans in consultation with patients and the team
  • Fulfill leadership responsibilities as Primary or Charge Nurse, including directing care plans, coordinating communication, and addressing administrative needs
  • Occasionally assist in the Depot Clinic to provide injection services to outpatients (with required training)
