Job Summary & Requirements

RVH’s Cardiac Intervention Unit (CIU) is a 16-bed, 14,300 square-foot space which includes two procedure rooms featuring first-in-Canada technology to perform cardiac angiograms, angioplasty and pacemaker implantation. Reporting to the Cardiac Intervention Unit & Cardiac Care Unit Manager, the Registered Nurse (RN) is a professional caregiver who is responsible for the provision of optimal care for Cardiology patients undergoing various procedures within a cardiac intervention unit & pre/post procedure area.

Education:

  • Current registration in good standing with the Ontario College of Nurses
  • Critical Care Certificate preferred or completion within two years of hire
  • Coronary Care I & II required
  • Current BCLS required
  • Current ACLS required
  • Must pass a screening arrhythmia quiz obtaining an 80% to move onto interview phase

Experience:

  • Must have a minimum of one (1) year of critical care experience or equivalent experience in ED/CCU or ICU is required
  • Previous Cardiac Intervention Unit experience is required for vacancies in the Cath Lab
  • Previous pre and post experience is required for vacancies in pre & post area
  • Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump experience is preferred
  • Strong background in cardiovascular physiology, electrocardiography and rhythm interpretation is required
  • Experience with aortic hemodynamic monitoring is required
  • Groin management experience is required
  • Experience with pacemaker device analyzing/programming is required

Responsibilities:

  • Practices competently within the Professional Standards for Registered Nurses in Ontario as defined by the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Provides the daily direct care for assigned patients(s) in the Cardiac Intervention Unit pre and post area
  • Communicates any changes in status of patient with MRP and Resource/Charge Nurse

Unit responsibilities:

  • Physical assessments
  • Prepares and administers medication and provides treatments as prescribed or as required according to professional standards and medication policies, then evaluates and documents outcomes
  • Provision of direct patient care
  • Transcription of orders
  • Checks and verifies physician orders

Patient Flow Management:

  • Ensures timely acceptance of patients (PULL methodology) to Unit/department and other referring centres
  • Works with service departments to reduce barriers to patient flow
  • Participates with interprofessional team Rounds/Communication Boards/ Daily Communication occurs as per department/unit requirements
