The Ministry of the Solicitor General facility includes a 100 bed Secure Treatment Unit (STU) to service the needs of incarcerated offenders with mental illness; and the STU has been designated a Schedule 1 facility under the Mental Health Act by the Minister of Health and Long Term Care.

Duties

  • Provide nursing care consistent with College Standards supportive and with patient treatment/rehabilitation goals for people with mental illness who come into conflict with the law
  • Develop and implement, in conjunction with interdisciplinary treatment team, creative treatment plans responsive to individual needs
  • Identify and coordinate provision of services and resources, in collaboration with affiliate and community partners, advocating to safeguard the person in care’s entitlements and rights
  • Lead and guide other nursing staff in daily work assignments, ensuring work is completed to standards
  • Provide patient care for the assigned case load

Qualifications

  • Current registration as a Registered Nurse in the Province of Ontario is required
  • BScN Preferred. Certification in psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing considered an asset
  • Clear understanding of the MHA and relevant legislation
  • Able to demonstrate knowledge and skill in psychiatric nursing practice as articulated in the Canadian Standards of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing Practice
  • Have met the Royal nursing and hospital standards for mandatory education (CPR, WHIMIS, Fire Safety and Evacuation Training)
