Duties
- Provide nursing care consistent with College Standards supportive and with patient treatment/rehabilitation goals for people with mental illness who come into conflict with the law
- Develop and implement, in conjunction with interdisciplinary treatment team, creative treatment plans responsive to individual needs
- Identify and coordinate provision of services and resources, in collaboration with affiliate and community partners, advocating to safeguard the person in care’s entitlements and rights
- Lead and guide other nursing staff in daily work assignments, ensuring work is completed to standards
- Provide patient care for the assigned case load
- Manage and direct the care of patients in crisis situations
- Recognize and intervene around emergent health problems
- Provide a safe, therapeutic environment including acute nursing care, crisis management and stabilization
- Prepare and administer mediation as per policy and procedure
- Apply the Mental Health Act and all other legislation related to the practice of psychiatric nursing
Qualifications
- Current registration as a Registered Nurse in the Province of Ontario is required
- BScN Preferred. Certification in psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing considered an asset
- Clear understanding of the MHA and relevant legislation
- Able to demonstrate knowledge and skill in psychiatric nursing practice as articulated in the Canadian Standards of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing Practice
- Have met the Royal nursing and hospital standards for mandatory education (CPR, WHIMIS, Fire Safety and Evacuation Training)
- CPI and ASSIST training is considered an asset
- Able to meet the Standards of nursing practice of the College of Nurses of Ontario
- Recognized leadership skills with the ability to build the inter-disciplinary team approach to delivering interventions
