Summary Of Duties

Reporting to the Patient Care Manager, the Registered Nurse in the Emergency Department (ED) works in collaboration with other members of the multidisciplinary team, the patient and family. Responsible for primary care of Emergency/Trauma patients, the main functions of the ED RN include, but are not limited to: assessment, intervention, education and patient advocacy. The ED RN supports the philosophy of Person-Focused Care and the principles of Sunnybrook’s mission, vision and values.

The Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre is offering to sponsor nurses who are interested in completing the Emergency Department Certificate program through Humber College. This is an exciting opportunity to diversify your career and develop emergency medicine skills. Candidates selected to participate in this full time 12-week program (theory and clinical combined) will be provided with a conditional offer of full-time employment in the ED contingent on the successful completion of the Emergency Department certification (theory and clinical), and ED orientation, in combination with a minimum 1- year commitment to work in the ED. This offer includes your full-time salary while in the course and tuition costs. Books and any other required material are the responsibility of the candidate. Upon successful completion of the program, both academically and clinically, staffing needs will determine your schedule and orientation plan.

Qualifications

  • Current registration with the Ontario College of Nurses
  • Baccalaureate degree in Nursing preferred
  • Current B.C.L.S. required
  • Basic arrhythmia course
  • Minimum two (2) years acute care, hospital experience required
  • Successful completion of the ED intake/review quiz
  • Successful ED interview
  • CPI training an asset
  • A.C.L.S. certification preferred
  • Course in trauma emergency nursing (TNCC, ATCN, EPICC-Trauma) preferred
  • Course in pediatric emergency nursing (ENPC, PEARS, PALS) preferred
  • TCAR is an asset
  • NVCI is an asset
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuing education within the past two (2) years with emphasis placed on courses/conferences related to Emergency Nursing/Medicine
  • Demonstrated commitment to organizational initiatives, such as participation in nursing council, unit committees, and quality improvement projects
