The Position
The Registered Nurse position is a member of a collaborative practice framework of health care professionals providing optimum client-center care within the setting of a correctional centre under the direction of the Manager of Health Services. This position is responsible for providing primary health care services and advanced emergency care through an expanded nursing role.
- Using evidence-based practice, the Registered Nurse provides competent, quality nursing care while maintaining professional autonomy and accountability.
- This position provides care to clients with a wide variety of health challenges and complexities in a setting where there is limited access to Physicians and support services.
- The Registered Nurse provides nursing assessments and interventions based on the Health Services Unit Policies and Procedures and numerous Medical Directives within an expanded nursing role under the direction of the Manager of Health Services.
Essential Qualifications

- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN)
- Currently holds a Nursing License in good standing or is eligible to obtain a Nursing License with Yukon Registered Nurses Association (YRNA)
- Recent experience working in an acute clinical setting (e.g. emergency department, community health centre)
- Experience working in an expanded nursing role
- Experience working with addiction medicine, including assessments, initiation of treatment and monitoring
- Experience working with clients with mental health needs, including comprehensive assessments, management, and individualized treatment plan development and monitoring
Desired Knowledge, Skills And Suitability
Candidates should have and may be assessed on:
- Contextual Knowledge
- Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)
- Current trends in health promotion/disease prevention practices and programs
- Applicable legislation, policies and procedures, including ATIPP, HIPMA, and privacy best practices.
Additional Information
Conditions of Employment:
- Have And Maintain Valid Security Clearance, including vulnerable sector (required prior to the first day of work)
- Valid Medical Clearance (required prior to the first day of work)
- Current registration, in good standing, with the Yukon Registered Nurses Association (YRNA)
- BLS Certification
- ACLS Certification
- TNCC Certification
- CTAS Certification
- ASSIST or equivalent mental health training
- Valid Class 5 driver’s licence (required on the first day of work)
Job Requirements
Critical deadlines, constant interruptions, and instructions from multiple sources (at times)
Regular instances of elevated stress due to various emergencies and the need for timely, crucial decision-making
Working shift work (Days and evenings), including weekends and statutory holidays
Daily exposure to clients suffering from chronic illnesses and infectious diseases within the confines of the institution
Potential for physical and/or verbal abuse from volatile/aggressive clients
Lifting and transferring clients and equipment (can be up to 300 lbs.)
Standing and walking for extended periods of time
Transferring heavy emergency equipment during emergency situations, which may involve stairs
Climbing stairs multiple times throughout the day
Working with hazardous materials
Potential exposure to infectious agents in handling and disposing of bodily fluids or treatment of clients with infections
Maintaining uncomfortable positions if required for emergency care and assessments
