Summary

The Occupational Therapist provides services to help children and students to achieve their highest possible level of independent functioning within the school, home, and community. The therapist is responsible for planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating programs to address the fine motor, perceptual motor, sensory, adaptive, postural, and self-care skills of children with disabilities and their families in order to optimize development.

Key Duties And Responsibilities

  • Assesses and evaluates children’s physical abilities using standardized assessment tools and non-standardized assessment including observation, interview, and review of medical and developmental reports.
  • Plans and develop goals for occupational therapy services in consultation with the family and based on the assessment results and the priorities of the family.
  • Provide direct therapy services to individual and groups of children and their families to implement occupational therapy program based on established goals.
  • Provide instruction, guidance, and advice to families, childcare programs, and other service providers on implementation of components of the occupational therapy program.
  • Recommend adaptive equipment and provide specialized therapy services as needed to meet the child therapeutic needs. Refer families to other community services and professionals as needed.
  • Liaise with school teams, educators, community service providers, and other professionals to ensure coordinated and consistent therapies and services. Participates in interdisciplinary team and family assessment, planning, direct services, and transition planning related to individual child and family services.
  • Maintain related records and produces reports as required.
  • Provide consultative and education services to families, caregivers, childcare providers, other service providers, and the public.
  • Maintain current knowledge on literature and research in the field. Provides up-to-date best practice information.

Education and Experience

Master’s degree in occupational therapy with pediatric training; registration with the College of Occupational Therapists. A minimum of two (2) years pediatric clinical experience, with some experience in a community-based program early intervention program and supporting school-age children.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

The Occupational Therapist understands and can work effectively with children and their families to provide therapy and consultation services. They will have demonstrated strong leadership, instructional, written, and oral skills, and will be a committed team member.

Location: Tri Cities and New Westminster

Hours of work: 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday (flexible to be scheduled with supervisor, some evenings and weekends may be required)
