Forensic Psychiatrist - Acute Care/Assessment (23-AHE-PSY-FOR-22)
Description
Description:
The Forensic Services at Alberta Hospital Edmonton are the largest forensic service in Alberta, serving primarily Edmonton and Northern Alberta, but also providing services around the province and at times for patients in other jurisdictions (e.g. NWT).
A full-time position in this service is available devoted primarily to the acute care and assessment of inpatients remanded by the court. This position would entail providing treatment to offenders who are remanded but requiring inpatient psychiatric care, completing court-ordered assessments of fitness to stand trial and criminal responsibility for remanded individuals, and providing care and assessment to patients under the Criminal Code Review Board (CCRB). In this position, it is expected that court assessments and any requested CCRB reports are completed at the level of a subspecialist in forensic psychiatry. Testifying in court, or at CCRB hearings, would be expected when requested or as required.
In this position, there will be time available for involvement in correctional psychiatry at either provincial or federal institutions. As well, the demands of the service will require the successful applicant to provide treatment or assessment services at the affiliated outpatient clinic (Forensic Assessment and Community Services - FACS clinic) as well. The position will be primarily inpatient based, however.
There are expected opportunities for the successful applicant to participate in Mental Health Court assessments, as well as involvement in the region AX clinic which provides rapid fitness assessments to the court.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have an MD, with subspecialty training in Forensic Psychiatry. Fellowship in the Royal College of Physicians of Canada is required. The successful applicant will have completed a residency in forensic psychiatry and will be eligible to write the examination to gain the Certification of Special Competence in Forensic Psychiatry.
