Forensic Psychiatrist (23-FACS-PSY-FOR-25)

Description

Description:

Forensic Services in Edmonton and Northern Alberta constitute the largest forensic mental health service in Alberta. Services are divided between the outpatient component, based at Forensic Assessment and Community Services (FACS), and the inpatient component, based at Alberta Hospital Edmonton (AHE). Our forensic service provides assessment and treatment services for individuals involved with criminal courts in the region, as well as the Criminal Code Review Board of Alberta (CCRB). We are also involved with psychiatric care of inmates in correctional facilities within Northern Alberta.

Job Opportunity:

A full-time position based at Forensic Assessment and Community Services (FACS) is available. This position would entail providing treatment to offenders who are referred by probation, are under the Criminal Code Review Board, as well as assessments of individuals as requested by the court. The delivery of this care would involve working within a multidisciplinary team.

It is expected that there will opportunities to devote time to providing psychiatric services to individuals in provincial correctional facilities. This would provide some continuity of care for individuals between correctional facilities and in the community at the FACS clinic.

Courts often refer individuals for assessment of fitness to stand trial, criminal responsibility, as well as pre-sentence risk assessments to the FACS clinic. Completion of these assessments would require that the assessor has the qualifications to provide these assessments at the level of a forensic psychiatrist in Canada. In doing so, testimony in court, or at CCRB hearings, would be expected when requested or as required. Support would be provided to assist overseas candidates in transitioning to the unique elements of the Canadian criminal justice system.
